1 Kings 17:5

Listen to this article

“So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative about the prophet Elijah during a time of drought and famine in the land of Israel. Elijah had prophesied that there would be no rain in the land for a certain period of time as a consequence of the people’s disobedience to God.

Bible Study:

Obedience to the Word of the Lord:The verse begins by stating that Elijah “went and did according unto the word of the Lord.” This highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Elijah responded promptly to God’s instructions, demonstrating his faith and trust in the Lord’s guidance. As believers, we are called to obey God’s Word and follow His leading in our lives.

Dwelling by the brook Cherith:After obeying God’s command, Elijah went to dwell by the brook Cherith. This brook was located before the Jordan River. Cherith means “cutting” or “separation,” indicating that this was a time of separation and preparation for Elijah. In a time of drought and famine, the brook Cherith became a place of provision and sustenance for Elijah.

Trusting God’s Provision:By dwelling by the brook Cherith, Elijah relied on God’s provision. Even in a time of scarcity, God made sure that there was water in the brook for Elijah to drink. Additionally, God commanded the ravens to bring Elijah bread and meat in the morning and evening (1 Kings 17:6). This demonstrates God’s faithfulness in providing for His servant’s needs. It teaches us that when we obey God and trust in His provision, He can sustain us even in the most challenging circumstances.

Lessons on Patience and Dependence:The brook Cherith was Elijah’s place of provision for a certain period. However, as the drought continued, the brook eventually dried up (1 Kings 17:7). This teaches us about the importance of patience and dependence on God. Sometimes, God’s provision may change or be redirected in our lives, and we need to trust in His timing and wisdom. Elijah’s faith was tested as he had to move on from the brook Cherith and rely on God’s guidance for what would come next.

Application:From this passage, we can draw several practical applications for our lives:

  • Obedience:We should strive to obey God’s Word and follow His leading, even when it may seem unconventional or challenging.
  • Trusting God’s Provision:Just as God provided for Elijah’s needs, we can trust that He will take care of us. We should rely on His provision and have faith that He will meet our needs.
  • Patience and Dependence:We should cultivate patience in our lives and be dependent on God’s timing. If one source of provision dries up, we can trust that God will guide us to the next step and provide for us in different ways.
  • Faith in Challenging Times:Elijah’s faith in God remained strong during the drought and famine. Similarly, we should hold on to our faith and trust in God’s faithfulness, even during difficult seasons in our lives.

Remember, Bible study is a continual process of seeking God’s wisdom and applying it to our lives. May we always be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we study God’s Word.
