1 Kings 17:13

Listen to this article

“And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on the verse you mentioned is part of the account of the prophet Elijah during a severe drought in Israel. At this time, Elijah had been directed by God to go to the town of Zarephath, where a widow would provide him with food.

Context:The verse you mentioned is part of the account of the prophet Elijah during a severe drought in Israel. At this time, Elijah had been directed by God to go to the town of Zarephath, where a widow would provide him with food.

Verse:“And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.” (1 Kings 17:13, KJV)

Trusting God’s Provision:In this verse, Elijah asks the widow to make him a small cake of bread before making food for herself and her son. At first glance, this request may seem unusual or even unfair. However, it reveals a profound lesson about trusting in God’s provision. Despite the scarcity and desperate circumstances, Elijah had faith that God would take care of him and the widow and her son.

Stepping Out in Faith:The widow’s immediate response might have been one of hesitation or doubt. Yet, she demonstrated remarkable faith by obeying Elijah’s request. She chose to trust in the word of the prophet, believing that God would honor her obedience and provide for her needs.

Generosity in Scarcity:Elijah’s request for the widow’s first cake could be seen as a test of her faith and generosity. By asking for the first portion, he was essentially asking her to give from her scarcity rather than from her abundance. This highlights the principle of giving sacrificially and trusting that God will multiply what we offer.

Lessons for us today:

  • Trust in God’s Provision:Just as Elijah trusted in God’s provision during a time of scarcity, we are called to have faith that God will take care of us in all circumstances. He is the ultimate provider.
  • Stepping out in Faith:The widow’s act of obedience and faith challenges us to step out in faith, even when our circumstances seem dire. God often works miracles when we trust Him and act upon His word.
  • Generosity and Sacrifice:The widow’s generosity in giving her first portion teaches us the importance of sacrificial giving. When we give selflessly, we demonstrate our trust in God’s ability to meet our needs.

Application:Reflect on your own life and circumstances. Are there areas where you find it difficult to trust in God’s provision? Are there opportunities for you to step out in faith and be generous, even when resources may seem limited? Pray and ask God to increase your faith and provide opportunities for you to trust and obey Him.

Remember to study the surrounding verses and consult commentaries or study guides for a more comprehensive understanding of the passage.
