1 Kings 18:24

Posted on 18 May at 11:35

“And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.”

This verse is part of the narrative of the prophet Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the people of Israel to determine once and for all who the true God was. He proposed a contest where the prophets of Baal would call upon their gods, and he would call upon the name of the Lord.

Here are some key points we can gather from this verse and the surrounding context:

  • The challenge of the contest:Elijah’s intention was to expose the false gods and affirm the sovereignty of the Lord God of Israel:By proposing the test, he sought to demonstrate the power and authority of the one true God over the pagan gods worshipped by the people at that time.
  • The invocation of the gods:Elijah invited the prophets of Baal to call upon the name of their gods, indicating that they were to pray and offer sacrifices to seek a response from their deities. The use of fire was significant:because fire was often associated with the divine presence and power.
  • Calling on the name of the LORD:Elijah declared that he would call upon the name of the Lord, the God of Israel:This emphasized his faith in Yahweh as the one true God and his confidence that God would answer his prayers.
  • The criterion for determining the true God:Elijah proposed that the God who answered by fire would be recognized as the true God. The expectation is that the deity who responded with fire to consume the offering would demonstrate his power and authority.
  • The response of the people:When Elijah presented the challenge, the people agreed that it was a fair and just proposal. They acknowledged the reasonableness of determining the true God:based on the evidence of a miraculous display of power.

This verse highlights the clash between the worship of the true God and the idolatrous practices of the time. Elijah’s call to choose the true God resonates with the broader theme found throughout the Bible of God’s exclusive claim to worship and the futility of placing faith in false gods.

It is important to note that this event on Mount Carmel served as a pivotal moment in Israel’s history, affirming the Lord’s supremacy and leading to the destruction of the prophets of Baal. It also emphasized the need for the people to turn back to God and reject idolatry.

Overall, 1 Kings 18:24 reminds us of the importance of sincere worship, the power of prayer, and the unwavering faith in the true God who reveals Himself through His mighty works.
