1 Kings 18:26

Posted on 18 May at 11:35

“And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into 1 Kings 18:26 in the King James Version of the Bible. This verse is part of a significant narrative depicting a showdown between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of the false god Baal on Mount Carmel.

Here is the verse in question:

In this context, King Ahab, who ruled over the northern kingdom of Israel, had embraced the worship of Baal, a pagan god, and led the Israelites astray. Elijah, a faithful prophet of the Lord, challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove the supremacy of the true God.

In the preceding verses, Elijah proposed a test to determine which deity was truly God. Each side would prepare a bull for sacrifice, but no fire would be set. The deity who answered by sending fire to consume the offering would be declared the true God. The prophets of Baal went first and called upon their god, engaging in fervent prayers and rituals from morning till noon.

The verse highlights the prophets of Baal’s efforts to get their god’s attention. They dressed the bull for sacrifice and called upon the name of Baal, pleading for him to hear them. However, despite their persistence and energetic display, there was no response. Their cries for an answer were met with silence.

The phrase “And they leaped upon the altar which was made” suggests that the prophets of Baal resorted to more desperate measures to attract Baal’s attention. It was a common practice among pagan worshipers to engage in physical acts, including dancing or leaping, to invoke the gods they worshipped. However, even these actions did not result in any response or demonstration of power from Baal.

This account serves to emphasize the futility and powerlessness of false gods. The prophets of Baal were unable to elicit any response from their deity despite their passionate and prolonged efforts. In contrast, the following events showcase the extraordinary display of God’s power when it was Elijah’s turn to call upon the Lord.

After the prophets of Baal’s failed attempts, Elijah rebuilt the altar of the Lord, prepared his sacrifice, and poured water on it three times, making it even more challenging for fire to ignite the soaked wood. Yet, when Elijah called upon the name of the Lord, God immediately responded by sending fire from heaven, consuming the offering, the altar, and even the water that saturated the sacrifice. This miraculous demonstration left no doubt that the God of Israel, the one true God, is all-powerful and far surpasses the false gods.

The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18:26 teaches us about the importance of faith in the true God and the futility of worshiping false gods. It demonstrates that the power of the true God is unmatched and that He is attentive to the prayers of His faithful servants.
