And said to his seruant, Goe vp now, looke toward the Sea. And hee went vp, and looked, and saide, There is nothing. And he said, Goe againe seuen times. 1 Kings 18:43 (KJV)

And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said,

There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 1 Kings 18:43 (KJV)

1 Kings 18:43 is part of the account of the prophet Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. In this chapter Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest to determine whose God is truly the Lord. After the prophets of Baal failed to produce fire from their altar, Elijah prays to the Lord, and God answers by consuming the offering with fire from heaven.

In verse 43, after the incredible display of God’s power, Elijah instructs his servant to go up and look toward the sea. The servant obeys and reports back that he sees nothing. Despite the initial report, Elijah tells the servant to go again seven times.

The number seven in the Bible often carries symbolic meaning, representing completeness, perfection, or divine fulfilment. In this context Elijah’s instruction to his servant to go back and look seven times suggests perseverance, faith, and a readiness to witness the fulfilment of God’s promise.

Elijah’s persistent actions are symbolic of the believer’s need to continue in prayer and faith, even when circumstances appear unchanged or discouraging. It serves as a reminder that God’s timing and plans are not always immediate or evident to us. Just as Elijah persevered and waited for the manifestation of God’s promise, we too should be patient and trust in God’s perfect timing.

The account teaches several important lessons. First, perseverance in prayer: Elijah’s instruction to his servant to go repeatedly encourages us to persist in prayer and not give up easily. We are called to continue seeking God’s guidance and intervention, even when it seems like nothing is happening.

Second, trust in God’s timing: Although the servant saw nothing initially, Elijah’s faith remained steadfast. Sometimes God’s answers and blessings may not come immediately, but we must trust that He knows the best time for their fulfilment.

Third, confidence in God’s faithfulness: Despite the servant’s repeated report of seeing nothing, Elijah did not waver in his confidence that God would fulfil His promise. Elijah’s unwavering faith serves as an example for us to trust in God’s promises, even in seemingly impossible circumstances.
