And Iehu the sonne of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to bee king ouer Israel: and Elisha the sonne of Shaphat of Abel Meholah, shalt thou annoint to be Prophet in thy roume. 1 Kings 19:16 (KJV)

Historical Context: 1 Kings 19:16 is part of the narrative that follows the famous encounter between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. After demonstrating God’s power by calling down fire from heaven and defeating the prophets of Baal, Elijah finds himself fleeing for his life from the wrath of Queen Jezebel.

God’s Instruction to Elijah: In this verse God speaks directly to Elijah, commanding him to anoint both a future king and a future prophet. The instruction is clear: Jehu the son of Nimshi is to be anointed as king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel‑meholah is to be anointed as prophet in Elijah’s place.

Jehu, the King of Israel: Jehu was a military commander who later became king of Israel. He was anointed during a later episode (2 Kings 9) by a servant of the prophet Elisha, acting on Elisha’s directive, as part of God’s judgment against the house of Ahab. His anointing marked the beginning of divine judgment against the house of Ahab, which had led Israel into idolatry and wickedness.

Elisha, the Prophet: Elisha was a prophet and a disciple of Elijah. God instructed Elijah to anoint Elisha as his successor, ensuring the continuation of prophetic ministry in Israel. Elisha’s anointing signified the passing of the prophetic mantle from Elijah to him.

The Significance: This verse highlights the sovereignty of God in raising up and appointing leaders and prophets according to His divine purposes. It demonstrates God’s commitment to His people and His desire to raise up righteous leaders who will bring about spiritual reform and justice.

Application: From 1 Kings 19:16 we learn several lessons. First, we can trust in God’s providence and guidance, knowing He has a purpose for each of our lives. Second, we should be open to God’s calling and willing to follow His instructions, just as Elijah and Elisha did. Finally, we are encouraged to faithfully serve God in whatever role He has appointed for us, whether that role is one of leadership or a supporting position.

Overall, 1 Kings 19:16 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, His faithfulness to His people, and His desire to raise up individuals to fulfill His purposes.
