1 Kings 20:22

And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

1 Kings 20:22 (KJV)

This verse comes after a great victory. Ben-hadad, king of Syria, had gathered a large army and besieged Samaria. Through a prophet, God gave Israel a surprising triumph. Now the same prophet returns to King Ahab with a new warning. The enemy is not finished; he will come again.

The prophet gives three commands. First, “strengthen thyself” means to fortify cities and increase the army. Second, “mark” means to take careful note of the situation. Third, “see what thou doest” means to plan wisely and act with care. These are not merely military advice; they are a divine warning that requires responsible action.

The phrase “at the return of the year” likely means spring, the usual time for kings to go to war. Knowing the timing allows Ahab to prepare. God, in His mercy, reveals what is coming so His people can be ready. The prophet’s role as God’s messenger is central: he delivers both the promise of victory and the call to prepare.

Throughout the Old Testament, prophets served as God’s messengers, delivering both promises and warnings. Here the prophet brings a warning after a victory, showing that past success does not guarantee future ease. The enemy will return, and vigilance is needed. This pattern appears elsewhere, such as in 1 Kings 20:26, where the Syrians return as foretold.

God’s warning to Ahab teaches us to take preparation seriously. When we know a challenge is coming, we should strengthen ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. We should also “mark” our circumstances and “see what we do,” making wise plans rather than acting carelessly.

This verse also shows God’s care. He does not leave His people in ignorance. He warns them of danger and gives them time to respond. We can trust that God will guide us through His Word and His Spirit, just as He guided Ahab through the prophet. The command to strengthen ourselves is not only about physical readiness; it is also a call to spiritual and moral preparation.

Consider a challenge you may face soon. How can you strengthen yourself today? What steps can you take to be ready? God’s warning is an act of love, inviting us to prepare and to rely on Him. Past victories remind us of His power, but they also call us to remain watchful and obedient.
