1 Kings 20:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:35

“And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger narrative in 1 Kings 20 that describes the conflict between the kings of Israel and Syria. The king of Syria, Ben‑hadad, gathered a large army and besieged Samaria, the capital of Israel. King Ahab of Israel, after seeking counsel from the Lord, was assured of victory and was encouraged to gather his own forces.

Verse Analysis:“And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him”: These were the advisors and officials of Ben‑hadad, the king of Syria, who were offering their counsel.

“Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we”:The servants of the king of Syria attributed the military success of the Israelites to their gods. They believed that the gods of Israel had power and authority over the hills, which gave them an advantage in battle.

“but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they”:The Syrian advisors suggested that if they engaged the Israelites in battle on the plain rather than in the hills, they would have the advantage. They believed that the change in terrain would neutralize the supposed influence of the gods of Israel and give them a better chance of victory.

Lessons and Applications:

  • The influence of God:The Syrian advisors recognised the influence of the gods on the outcome of battles. While their understanding was limited to their own gods and their association with specific terrains, as believers, we acknowledge the one true God who has power over all creation. It is important for us to have faith in God’s providence and seek His guidance in all situations.
  • The limitations of human understanding:The Syrian advisors’ reasoning was based on their limited understanding of divine power. They believed that changing the battlefield would affect the outcome, disregarding the true source of Israel’s strength. Similarly, we must be cautious not to rely solely on our own human wisdom and understanding, but rather trust in God’s wisdom and guidance.
  • Trusting in God’s promises:Despite the Syrian advisors’ strategy, the outcome of the battle was ultimately determined by God. It serves as a reminder for us to trust in God’s promises and remain faithful to Him, even when faced with daunting circumstances. God’s plans and purposes cannot be thwarted by human strategies or limitations.
  • Spiritual battles:While this verse refers to a physical battle, it can also be applied metaphorically to the spiritual battles we face in our lives. We must recognise that our true strength and victory come from God, not from our own efforts or the strategies of this world. By putting our trust in God, we can overcome any challenges we encounter.

In summary, 1 Kings 20:23 presents a glimpse into the mindset of the Syrian advisors and their limited understanding of divine power. As believers, we can learn from this passage to trust in God’s promises, seek His guidance, and recognise that true victory comes from Him.
