1 Kings 20:36

Posted on 18 May at 11:20

Then said he vnto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voyce of the Lord, beholde, assoone as thou art departed from me, a lyon shal slay thee. And assoone as hee was departed from him, a lyon found him, and slew him. 1 Kings 20:36 (KJV)

In the narrative of 1 Kings 20 the kingdom of Israel, under King Ahab, faces the threat of Ben‑Hadad, king of Aram. After a series of military engagements, a prophet confronts Ahab and rebukes him for his disobedience, warning that victory will not come because the LORD’s word has been ignored. Verse 36 records the prophet’s stern declaration to a man who had been placed under his care but who failed to obey the divine command. The prophet says, “Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou departest from me, a lion shall slay thee; and as soon as thou departest from him, a lion shall find thee, and kill thee.” The text then confirms that the lion indeed found the man and killed him as soon as he left the prophet’s presence.

This brief but powerful episode underscores several key spiritual principles. First, the importance of heeding God’s voice is made explicit: the prophet’s warning is directly linked to the man’s disobedience, and the swift judgment demonstrates that God’s instructions are given for guidance and protection. Second, the consequences of disobedience are portrayed in stark terms. The man’s failure to follow the prophet’s command results in an immediate and fatal outcome, serving as a sobering reminder that our actions have real, sometimes severe, repercussions.

Third, the passage highlights God’s faithfulness to His word. The prophecy is fulfilled exactly as spoken, showing that when the LORD declares judgment, it will be carried out without delay. Finally, the narrative stresses accountability for entrusted responsibilities. The man was given a specific task and placed under the prophet’s supervision; his neglect of that duty led to his death. This calls believers to be diligent and faithful in the responsibilities God entrusts to them, recognizing that neglect can invite divine discipline.

Overall, 1 Kings 20:36 calls us to a reverent obedience, reminding us that God’s commands are to be taken seriously, that disobedience invites judgment, and that God’s promises—whether of blessing or warning—are trustworthy and will be fulfilled in His perfect timing.
