1 Kings 22:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And Micaiah saide, If thou returne at all in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O people, euery one of you. 1 Kings 22:28 (KJV)

Context: The passage comes from the story of King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah, who were considering going to war against the kingdom of Aram (Syria). Before the battle they sought the counsel of the prophets. Many prophets were summoned and all prophesied success and victory. Jehoshaphat, however, asked to hear from a prophet of the Lord, and Micaiah was called.

Micaiah’s Message of Truth: In this verse Micaiah delivers his prophetic message to Ahab, boldly declaring that if Ahab returns from battle unharmed it would prove that the Lord had not spoken through him. He refuses to give a false prophecy that aligns with the king’s desires, showing his commitment to speaking only the truth.

Micaiah’s Integrity and God’s Sovereignty: Micaiah’s statement reveals his integrity as a prophet of God. Despite pressure to conform to the popular opinion of victory, he remains faithful to delivering God’s word, recognizing that his role is not to please men but to convey the Lord’s message. His words also emphasize God’s sovereignty, implying that the outcome of the battle is in God’s hands and depends on His will, not on human expectation.

The Call to Listen: After Micaiah’s declaration the responding prophets urge the assembly, “Hearken, O people, every one of you.” This call underscores the importance of paying attention to the words spoken, reminding the listeners that God’s word should not be taken lightly and must be heeded.

Lessons to Learn:

Integrity and Faithfulness – Micaiah’s unwavering commitment to truth reminds us to stand for what is right even when it opposes popular opinion or brings opposition.

Trusting God’s Word – His refusal to compromise serves as an example to prioritize God’s truth over our own desires or the opinions of others, trusting that His plans are greater than ours.

Listening to God’s Message – The appeal to “Hearken” calls us to attentively listen to God’s Word and apply its teachings in our lives.
