Listen to this article

“And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.”

Context: 2 Kings 1:15 is part of the account of Elijah’s encounter with King Ahaziah of Israel. After the death of King Ahab, Ahaziah became the king of Israel. However, Ahaziah turned away from the Lord and sought guidance from false gods, particularly Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron. As a result, God sent Elijah to confront Ahaziah and pronounce judgment upon him.

The role of Elijah:Elijah was a prophet chosen by God to be His mouthpiece to the nation of Israel. He played a significant role in confronting the idolatrous practices of the Israelites and calling them to repentance. In this passage, Elijah obediently follows the instruction of the angel of the Lord and goes to meet King Ahaziah, despite the potential danger involved.

The angel’s command:In verse 15, the angel of the Lord instructs Elijah to go down with King Ahaziah and not to be afraid of him. This command demonstrates God’s authority over the situation and reassures Elijah that He is in control. It also implies that Elijah was initially hesitant or fearful about going down to meet the king, but the angel encourages him to proceed.

Lessons from the passage:

  • Obedience to God’s command:Elijah’s immediate response to the angel’s command shows his obedience to God. As believers, we are also called to obey God’s instructions, even when they seem challenging or uncomfortable. Trusting in God’s guidance and protection enables us to fulfill His purposes.
  • God’s reassurance in times of fear:The angel’s words, “be not afraid of him,” remind us that God is with us in moments of fear or uncertainty. When we face difficult situations or encounter opposition, we can find courage and strength in the Lord. He will provide the necessary support and protection.
  • Confronting idolatry:This passage highlights the danger of seeking guidance from false gods or idols. Ahaziah’s choice to turn away from the Lord led to divine judgment. It serves as a reminder for us to remain faithful to God alone and not to put our trust in anything or anyone that detracts from His rightful place in our lives.

Application:As we reflect on 2 Kings 1:15, we can examine our own lives and consider the following:

  • Are we obedient to God’s commands, even when they seem challenging or go against our own desires?
  • Do we trust in God’s reassurance and find courage in Him when we face difficult or fearful situations?
  • Are there any “idols” in our lives that we have turned to for guidance or security? Are we willing to confront and turn away from them, seeking the Lord wholeheartedly?

Remember, the Bible is filled with valuable lessons and wisdom, and it’s important to read and study it in its entirety to gain a deeper understanding of God’s word.
