2 Kings 3:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.”

Context:Before we delve into this particular verse, let’s understand the context of 2 Kings 3. This chapter describes a conflict between the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom against the Moabites. The armies of the three kings were on a campaign against Moab, and they were in dire need of water for their troops and animals.

Seeking God’s Guidance:In their desperation, the kings sought the counsel of the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 3:11-12). Elisha initially rebuked the kings but agreed to seek the Lord’s guidance on their behalf.

Elisha’s Request for a Minstrel:When the kings were in the presence of Elisha, he desired to inquire of the Lord and receive a prophetic word from Him. To create an atmosphere conducive to hearing from God, Elisha requested a minstrel to play music.

The Minstrel’s Role:The minstrel played music before Elisha, creating an atmosphere of worship and praise. It is important to note that music has been used throughout the Bible to usher in the presence of God and prepare hearts for divine encounters.

The Hand of the Lord:As the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha. This phrase signifies the anointing and power of God being upon him. It implies that Elisha received a divine inspiration, enabling him to speak with authority and declare the word of the Lord.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Worship and Praise:The inclusion of a minstrel in this scene underscores the importance of worship and praise in seeking God’s guidance and presence. Music has the ability to stir our hearts, align our focus with God, and create an atmosphere where we can hear from Him.
  • Creating Space for God:Elisha recognized the need to set apart a time and space to seek the Lord. When we intentionally create an environment conducive to encountering God, we position ourselves to receive His guidance and empowerment.
  • Prophetic Word:Elisha’s request for the minstrel resulted in the hand of the Lord coming upon him. It highlights the significance of seeking prophetic insight and direction from God. As we worship and seek His face, we open ourselves up to receive divine guidance and revelation for our lives.
  • God’s Manifest Presence:The hand of the Lord coming upon Elisha signifies the manifest presence and anointing of God. When we invite God into our circumstances and seek His will, His power and authority can be manifested in our lives.

In summary, 2 Kings 3:15 teaches us the importance of worship, creating an atmosphere conducive to encountering God, seeking His prophetic guidance, and opening ourselves up to experience His manifest presence.
