2 Kings 3:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches.”

Context:2 Kings 3 recounts the story of the conflict between the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom against the king of Moab. The Israelite army, along with the armies of Judah and Edom, was trapped in the wilderness of Edom with no water for themselves or their animals. They sought the guidance of the prophet Elisha, who received a message from the Lord. 2 Kings 3:16 records part of that message.

Key Points and Lessons:

Dependence on God:The Israelite kings realised their desperate need for divine intervention. They turned to the prophet Elisha, recognising that only God could provide the solution to their water shortage. This passage reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and help in times of trouble. It teaches us to rely on God’s power rather than our own strength and abilities.

Obedience to God’s Word:Elisha relayed God’s message to the kings: “Make this valley full of ditches.” This instruction may have seemed peculiar at first, as the Israelites were looking for water, not ditches. However, they obeyed without fully understanding the purpose. This act of obedience demonstrates the importance of following God’s instructions, even when they don’t make immediate sense to us. It shows that our role is to trust and obey, leaving the results to God.

Preparation and Faith:Digging ditches in a dry valley may have seemed like an exercise in futility, but it required faith and preparation. The kings and their armies had to trust that God would provide the water they needed. They showed their faith by actively preparing for the expected blessing. This teaches us that our faith should be accompanied by actions. When we receive God’s promises, we should take practical steps to prepare ourselves for the fulfillment of those promises.

God’s Provision:As the story progresses, God miraculously provided water in abundance. He caused the valley to be filled with water, enabling the armies and their animals to drink and be refreshed. This miraculous provision demonstrates God’s power and faithfulness. It reminds us that God is capable of meeting our needs, even in seemingly impossible situations. Just as He provided water in the desert, He can provide for us in our times of need.

Application:

As we reflect on 2 Kings 3:16, we can draw several applications for our own lives:

  • Seek God’s guidance and help in all circumstances, acknowledging our dependence on Him.
  • Trust and obey God’s instructions, even when they seem unconventional or challenging.
  • Combine faith with action, actively preparing for the fulfillment of God’s promises.
  • Rely on God’s provision, knowing that He is faithful to meet our needs.

By applying these principles, we can grow in our faith, experience God’s provision, and witness His power working in our lives, just as the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom did in this biblical account.
