2 Kings 6:11

Listen to this article

“Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?”

Context:This verse is part of a larger narrative that describes the ongoing conflict between the king of Syria and the king of Israel. The prophet Elisha was divinely revealing the battle plans of the Syrian king to the king of Israel, which caused great frustration and confusion for the Syrian king.

Historical Context:

  • The events in 2 Kings 6 take place during the divided kingdom of Israel. Israel is ruled by King Joram, while Syria is ruled by King Ben-hadad.
  • The Syrian king was trying to wage war against Israel, but his plans were continuously being foiled by the prophet Elisha.
  • Frustrated by his failed attempts, the Syrian king suspected that there might be a spy among his own ranks.
  • The Troubled Heart:
  • The verse begins by stating that the heart of the king of Syria was “sore troubled.” The continuous defeat and setbacks had deeply troubled him.
  • This troubled heart can be seen as a response to the frustration and confusion caused by the fact that his military strategies were consistently being exposed to the king of Israel.
  • It also reveals the vulnerability and uncertainty that can plague even those in positions of power and authority when faced with unexpected opposition.
  • Seeking Counsel:
  • In response to his troubled heart, the Syrian king gathers his servants and seeks their advice. He asks them, “Will ye not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
  • The king suspects that there might be a traitor among his own people, someone secretly supporting the king of Israel and leaking information about the Syrian army’s plans.
  • This demonstrates the king’s desperation and his willingness to consider all possibilities in order to address the issue at hand.

Lessons and Application:

  • The story in this verse reminds us that even the most powerful individuals can face moments of doubt, vulnerability, and frustration.
  • It also highlights the importance of seeking counsel and wisdom from others when faced with difficult situations.
  • Sometimes, our own perspectives may be limited, and seeking advice from others can bring fresh insights and potential solutions.
  • Additionally, it serves as a reminder that God can work in mysterious ways to protect and guide His people, as seen in the prophet Elisha’s ability to reveal the Syrian king’s plans.

Overall, this verse serves as a reminder that even in the midst of troubles and uncertainties, seeking counsel and trusting in God’s guidance can bring clarity and resolution to challenging situations.
