2 Kings 7:18

Listen to this article

And it came to passe, as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flowre for a shekel, shalbe to morrow about this time, in the gate of Samaria: 2 Kings 7:18 (KJV)

Context: The book of 2 Kings recounts the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. In this particular chapter, the city of Samaria, the capital of Israel, was under siege by the king of Aram. The people were facing a severe famine, and the situation was dire.

The Man of God: In this verse, it mentions the man of God who had spoken to the king. This refers to the prophet Elisha, who was chosen by God to be His spokesperson and to deliver His messages to the people of Israel. Elisha prophesies about the sudden turnaround of the food shortage in Samaria.

God’s Miraculous Provision: Through the prophet Elisha, God makes a remarkable promise that within a day, there would be an abundance of food in Samaria. Barley and fine flour, which were scarce during the famine, would be available at very low prices.

A Test of Faith: The king’s officer, who doubted Elisha’s words, expressed skepticism in the following verse (2 Kings 7:19). He questioned how such a thing could happen, even if God were to open the windows of heaven. Elisha responds by assuring him that he would see it happen but would not partake of it.

God’s Faithfulness: This verse highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises. Despite the dire circumstances, God intervenes and provides for His people. It demonstrates that when God speaks, He has the power to bring about what He declares, even if it seems impossible.

Lessons for us: This account teaches us several valuable lessons. It reminds us that God can turn impossible situations around in an instant. It encourages us to trust in God’s promises, even when circumstances appear bleak. We are reminded that God’s faithfulness endures through challenging times, and He will provide for His people.

Application: As we reflect on this passage, we can apply it to our own lives. We may face various difficulties and challenges, but we can trust in God’s faithfulness and provision. We should seek to be obedient to His word, like Elisha, and have faith in God’s promises. We can also be encouraged to share the good news of God’s provision and faithfulness with others.

Remember, the Bible is a rich source of wisdom and guidance, and further study and reflection on the entire chapter of 2 Kings 7 can provide additional insights and lessons for our lives.
