2 Kings 10:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught-house unto this day.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that recounts the actions of Jehu, who was anointed as king over Israel by the prophet Elisha. Jehu was tasked with executing God’s judgment on the wicked royal family of Ahab and destroying the worship of Baal, a false god.

In this specific verse, we see that Jehu ordered the destruction of the image and house of Baal. Baal was a prominent pagan deity worshipped by the Canaanites and other neighbouring peoples. The worship of Baal involved various immoral practices and was an affront to the true worship of God.

Here are some key points to consider in this Bible study:

  • Symbolic destruction: By breaking down the image and house of Baal, Jehu symbolically eradicated the false worship associated with this pagan god. This action demonstrated Jehu’s commitment to restoring the true worship of God and eliminating idolatry.
  • Divine judgment: The destruction of Baal’s image and house was a manifestation of God’s judgment upon the idolatrous practices of the Israelites. It was a fulfilment of God’s command to His people to worship Him alone and not engage in the worship of false gods.
  • Contrast with Ahab: Jehu’s actions contrast with the reign of Ahab, who, along with his wife Jezebel, had actively promoted and supported the worship of Baal in Israel. By demolishing Baal’s image and house, Jehu sought to rectify the spiritual corruption that had taken place under Ahab’s rule.
  • A transformed purpose: The verse concludes by stating that the house of Baal was turned into a “draught-house” or a latrine. This indicates that the place that was once used for idolatrous worship was now desecrated and repurposed for a common and lowly use. This transformation further emphasizes the eradication of false worship and the humiliation of Baal.

Overall, 2 Kings 10:27 highlights the righteous actions of Jehu in destroying the worship of Baal and reestablishing the worship of the true God. It serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and rejecting idolatry in all its forms.
