2 Kings 10:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

But Iehu tooke no heede to walke in the Law of the Lord God of Israel, with all his heart: for he departed not from the sinnes of Ieroboam, which made Israel to sinne. 2 Kings 10:31 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of 2 Kings is a continuation of the narrative of 1 Kings, chronicling the history of the kings of Israel and Judah.

During this period, Israel was divided into two kingdoms: the northern kingdom of Israel, consisting of ten tribes, and the southern kingdom of Judah, consisting of two tribes.

The verse refers to Jehu, who was anointed by God through the prophet Elisha to become king over Israel and execute judgment against the house of Ahab.

Jehu’s Actions:

Jehu fulfilled the prophecy given by God concerning the destruction of the house of Ahab and the eradication of Baal worship in Israel (2 Kings 9:6‑10).

Jehu carried out a ruthless purge, killing Ahab’s descendants and eliminating those associated with Baal worship (2 Kings 10:1‑28).

Despite his zeal for executing God’s judgment, Jehu’s heart was not wholly devoted to God. He did not follow God’s law with all his heart.

Jehu’s Failure:

The verse points out Jehu’s failure to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart.

According to 2 Kings 10:32‑33, Jehu “did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD” by destroying Baal worship but still allowed the calf worship established by Jeroboam. This partial obedience highlights his failure to fully commit to God’s commands.

Jehu did not completely abandon the sins introduced by Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel.

Jeroboam had established golden calf worship in Israel as a political strategy to prevent the people from going to Jerusalem in Judah to worship God (1 Kings 12:26‑33). This became a recurring sin in Israel.

Despite his initial obedience to execute God’s judgment, Jehu compromised by clinging to the sins of Jeroboam. His dynasty eventually fell, as recorded in 2 Kings 15:12‑16.

Lessons to Learn:

Jehu’s example teaches us the importance of wholehearted devotion to God. Partial obedience or selective commitment is not pleasing to Him.

Even though Jehu carried out God’s judgment against Baal worship, his compromise with Jeroboam’s calf worship demonstrates that partial obedience leads to spiritual failure.

We should examine our own lives and ensure that we are not holding on to any sinful practices or compromises that hinder our relationship with God.

True obedience to God requires us to walk in His ways completely, following His commandments and seeking His will in all aspects of our lives.

In summary, 2 Kings 10:31‑33 highlights Jehu’s mixed legacy—while he destroyed Baal worship, his failure to abandon Jeroboam’s calf worship shows the consequences of partial obedience. This passage reminds us of the importance of wholehearted devotion to God and the dangers of compromising our commitment to Him.
