2 Kings 10:34

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Now the rest of the acts of Iehu, and all that he did, & all his might, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel? 2 Kings 10:34 (KJV)

Historical Context: The verse is found in 2 Kings, which records the history of the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It appears at the conclusion of the account of King Jehu’s reign in the northern kingdom of Israel.

Jehu’s Reign: Jehu was anointed by the prophet Elisha to execute God’s judgment on the house of Ahab and to eradicate the worship of Baal. He acted with determination and brutality, killing King Joram of Israel, King Ahaziah of Judah, Queen Jezebel, and the remaining members of Ahab’s family, and he destroyed the prophets and priests of Baal.

Assessment of Jehu’s Reign: Although Jehu eliminated Baal worship, his reforms were incomplete. He allowed the golden calves at Bethel and Dan to continue, and 2 Kings 10:31 records that he left the altar at Bethel standing, showing that his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord.

The Book of the Chronicles: The verse points to a detailed record of Jehu’s acts in the “book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel,” an official historical compilation that is no longer extant. It would have contained the reigns, achievements, and significant events of Israel’s kings.

Lessons for Us: The account reminds us that merely accomplishing external tasks is insufficient. Jehu’s zeal in carrying out judgment was offset by his failure to pursue a complete devotion to God. The passage urges believers to seek wholehearted obedience rather than selective or compromised worship.

Seeking a Complete Relationship with God: The story challenges us to examine whether we are merely performing religious duties or genuinely aligning our actions, attitudes, and motives with God’s will, acknowledging Him as the ultimate authority in our lives.

The Importance of God’s Word: The reference to the lost chronicles underscores the value of preserving and studying God’s Word. While those specific records are gone, the Bible itself serves as the authoritative record of God’s dealings with humanity, providing insight, wisdom, and guidance.

Application: As we study 2 Kings 10:34, we should read the surrounding verses and consult trusted commentaries to gain a fuller understanding, allowing the lessons of Jehu’s mixed legacy to shape a sincere and complete relationship with the Lord.
