2 Kings 10:36

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And the time that Iehu reigned ouer Israel in Samaria, was twentie and eight yeeres. 2 Kings 10:36 (KJV)

And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.

Context: The book of 2 Kings records the history of the kings of Israel and Judah, tracing the spiritual decline and downfall of these kingdoms. Jehu was anointed as king of Israel by the prophet Elijah, with Elisha acting as his representative. He was chosen by God to execute judgment upon the house of Ahab for their wickedness.

Jehu’s Reign: This verse marks the duration of Jehu’s reign, which lasted for twenty‑eight years. During his reign he implemented various reforms, most notably the destruction of Baal worship throughout Israel. Yet he did not follow God’s law completely; the worship of the golden calves at Dan and Bethel was allowed to continue.

Lessons from Jehu’s Reign:

Partial Obedience – Jehu’s reign serves as a reminder of the dangers of partial obedience. Although he eradicated the house of Ahab and eliminated Baal worship, he failed to remove the golden‑calf cult. This highlights the importance of complete obedience to God’s commands rather than selective obedience.

God’s Use of Flawed Individuals – Jehu was a flawed leader, yet God used him as an instrument of judgment. This demonstrates that God can work through imperfect people to accomplish His purposes and reminds us to rely on God’s grace and strength rather than our own abilities.

Accountability – Jehu’s reign underscores the concept of accountability. God held Jehu responsible for the extent to which he obeyed His commands. Likewise, believers are accountable to God for their obedience and faithfulness to His Word.

Application:

Complete Obedience – We should strive for wholehearted obedience to God’s commands, not picking and choosing which ones to follow. God desires our full devotion and submission.

God’s Grace – Even when we fall short or make mistakes, God can still use us for His purposes. We are to trust in His grace and rely on His strength to carry out His will.

Accountability and Integrity – Recognizing our accountability to God should lead us to live with integrity in every area of life. We must seek to honour God in our actions and decisions.
