2 Kings 11:2
“But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.”
Historical Context:2 Kings 11:2 takes place during a tumultuous time in the history of Israel. King Ahaziah of Judah had died, and his mother Athaliah seized the throne and began to reign. She was determined to eliminate all potential threats to her power, including the royal family. This verse describes how Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, rescued her infant nephew, Joash, from the massacre and hid him from Athaliah.
- Jehosheba’s Courage and Faith:
Jehosheba’s actions in rescuing Joash were courageous and displayed her faithfulness to God’s covenant with the Davidic line. Despite the danger, she risked her life to protect the rightful heir to the throne. Her actions highlight the importance of preserving the lineage of David, as God had promised that the Messiah would come from David’s line (2 Samuel 7:12-13).
The Preservation of God’s Promise:
Through Jehosheba’s actions, God’s promise to David was preserved. Athaliah’s attempt to exterminate the royal descendants threatened the fulfillment of God’s covenant. However, by hiding Joash, Jehosheba ensured that the line of David would continue. Joash later became king at the age of seven and ruled Judah for forty years, restoring the worship of God and initiating important religious reforms.
- The Providential Hand of God:
The events described in 2 Kings 11:2 demonstrate God’s providence and His ability to protect and preserve His chosen people. Despite the wickedness and violence surrounding the situation, God worked behind the scenes to ensure that His plan for the Davidic dynasty would continue. He used Jehosheba’s bravery and resourcefulness to bring about His purposes.
