2 Kings 11:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third part at the gate behinde the guard: so shall yee keepe the watch of the house, that it be not broken downe. 2 Kings 11:6 (KJV)

Context: This verse belongs to the narrative of Joash’s coronation as king of Judah. The wicked queen mother Athaliah had seized the throne and slain all the royal heirs, sparing only the infant Joash, who was hidden by his aunt Jehosheba. When Joash was seven, the priest Jehoiada presented him to the captains of the guard and secured a covenant with them to protect the young king and overthrow Athaliah’s reign.

Historical Background: To grasp the significance of this passage, it is essential to know the historical setting. Athaliah’s rule was marked by idolatry, the destruction of the temple of the Lord, and the promotion of Baal worship that threatened the temple officials (2 Kings 11:18). Jehoiada’s plan to restore Joash to the throne was a pivotal moment for Judah.

Division of Guards: Jehoiada organized the forces into three groups to safeguard the temple and the king during the coronation. One‑third of the guards were stationed at the gate of Sur, a second third at the gate behind the guard, and the remaining third were to keep watch over the house. The biblical account (2 Kings 11:6‑7; 2 Chronicles 23:5‑7) records that the priests and Levites were to enter the house of the LORD, while all the people kept the watch of the LORD, and the Levites surrounded the king with weapons, putting to death anyone who entered unlawfully. This arrangement ensured both the safety of the king and the sanctity of the temple.

Protection and Defence: The physical guards appointed by Jehoiada serve as a picture of the spiritual guards believers need. We are called to guard our hearts, minds, and lives against the enemy’s attacks (Proverbs 4:23), remaining vigilant, prayerful, and alert to temptations.

Unity and Cooperation: The success of Jehoiada’s scheme depended on the unity and cooperation of the guard groups. Likewise, the body of Christ functions best when believers work together, supporting and encouraging one another in the spiritual journey (Ephesians 4:3).

Faithfulness and Commitment: Jehoiada and the guards remained faithful to their task despite danger. Believers are likewise called to steadfast devotion to God’s purposes, refusing to waver regardless of circumstances (1 Corinthians 15:58).

God’s Sovereignty: Although this verse does not name God explicitly, the whole account underscores His sovereign control over nations and individuals. Despite Athaliah’s wickedness and attempts to eradicate David’s line, God preserved the promised royal lineage and brought about her downfall through Jehoiada’s plan, reminding us that He works behind the scenes according to His will (Romans 8:28).

In conclusion, this passage highlights the strategic preparation for protecting God’s anointed king and invites believers to reflect on spiritual vigilance, unity, faithfulness, and trust in divine sovereignty.
