2 Kings 12:14
But they gaue that to the workemen, and repaired therewith the house of the Lord. 2 Kings 12:14 (KJV)
Context:
In this verse we are in the time of Jehoash (Joash), who became king of Judah at the age of seven and reigned for forty years. During his reign Jehoash ordered the repair of the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem.
Historical Background:
The temple had fallen into disrepair because of neglect and plundering under previous kings. Recognising the temple’s importance, Jehoash sought to restore its former glory and established a system for collecting contributions for the work.
The Act of Giving:
The people gave their money for the repair and entrusted those funds to the workmen responsible for the restoration. The verse records that the contributions were handed over to the workers, who used them to repair the house of the Lord.
Purpose:
The funds were used exclusively for the renovation and maintenance of the house of the Lord, demonstrating the people’s dedication to worship and to restoring God’s dwelling place.
Spiritual Lessons:
Stewardship:
The willingness of the people to give their resources teaches the principle of stewardship. Everything we possess ultimately belongs to God, and we are called to use our resources to support His work and the upkeep of His kingdom.
Prioritising God’s House:
Jehoash understood the temple as the dwelling place of God’s presence. Likewise believers today should prioritise God’s house, which the New Testament identifies as the Church. Just as the temple required maintenance, the Church needs our active involvement, support, and investment.
Willingness to Give:
The people’s generous giving reflects faith and commitment. Giving should flow from a willing heart, not from compulsion. Scripture affirms that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7) and rewards generosity.
Application:
As we reflect on this passage we can examine our own attitude toward giving—financially and in other areas—and consider how we support God’s work. Let us prioritize the Church, invest our time, talents, and resources, and cultivate a cheerful, generous spirit.
Conclusion:
May the study of 2 Kings 12:14 inspire a life marked by stewardship, generosity, and dedication to God’s work.
