2 Kings 13:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.”

Context:The book of 2 Kings is a historical account of the kings of Israel and Judah. In this particular verse, we learn about the beginning of Jehoash’s reign over Israel.

Key Points:The Reign of Jehoash:Jehoash, also known as Joash, was the son of Jehoahaz. He became the king of Israel in Samaria, the capital city of the northern kingdom, in the thirty-seventh year of Joash’s reign over Judah. Jehoash reigned for sixteen years. A Divided Kingdom:At this point in history, the kingdom of Israel was divided into two separate entities: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Jehoash’s reign pertains to the northern kingdom. The Decline of Israel:The book of 2 Kings provides a detailed account of the various kings who ruled over Israel. Unfortunately, many of them turned away from God and led the nation into idolatry and wickedness. This disobedience ultimately led to the downfall of Israel and their eventual exile by the Assyrians.

Lessons and Applications:The Consequences of Disobedience:The history of Israel serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God. Despite God’s repeated warnings through the prophets, the kings and people of Israel persisted in their disobedience, which eventually led to their downfall. As believers, we should be mindful of the dangers of disobedience and strive to walk in obedience to God’s Word. The Importance of Leadership:The reign of the kings had a significant impact on the spiritual direction of the nation. Some kings, like Jehoash, did what was right in the sight of the Lord, while others led the nation astray. This highlights the crucial role of leadership in influencing the spiritual condition of a community or nation. As leaders in our respective spheres of influence, we should strive to lead with integrity, wisdom, and a commitment to God’s principles. God’s Faithfulness:Despite the failures and shortcomings of the kings and the people of Israel, God remained faithful to His covenant. He continued to send prophets and offer opportunities for repentance. This demonstrates God’s patience, mercy, and desire for reconciliation. It serves as a reminder that even when we fall short, God’s grace is available to us if we turn back to Him with genuine repentance.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 13:10 provides a glimpse into the reign of Jehoash over Israel. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience, the significance of leadership, and God’s faithfulness throughout history. Studying these historical accounts can help us draw valuable lessons and insights to apply in our own lives today.
