2 Kings 13:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin: but he walked therein.”

This verse refers to Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, who became the king of Israel. During his reign, he continued the practices established by Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, which led Israel astray from worshiping the true God.

To understand this verse better, let’s examine the historical and cultural context and explore its significance.

Historical Background:

Jehoahaz reigned over Israel for seventeen years, from approximately 814 to 798 BC. He followed the footsteps of his father, Jehu, in that he did not remove the golden calves that Jeroboam had set up at Bethel and Dan. These idolatrous practices initiated by Jeroboam were not only sinful in the sight of God but also contributed to the spiritual downfall of the northern kingdom of Israel.

Departure from God’s Commandments:

The verse emphasizes that Jehoahaz did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam. Jeroboam had introduced false worship and idolatrous practices, attempting to solidify his rule and prevent the people from going to Jerusalem to worship at the temple. Instead, he established golden calves as objects of worship. By continuing these practices, Jehoahaz perpetuated the sinful behaviour that led Israel astray.

Disobedience and Consequences:

Jehoahaz’s failure to turn away from the sins of Jeroboam reflected his disobedience to God’s commandments. The repetition of this pattern in Israel’s leadership resulted in spiritual decline, idolatry, and moral corruption among the people. God had warned Israel of the consequences of their disobedience, which included being conquered and exiled by foreign nations.

This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commandments and the potential consequences of departing from His ways. The example of Jehoahaz teaches us the dangers of perpetuating sinful practices and the need to break free from destructive patterns.

Overall, 2 Kings 13:11 reminds us of the significance of faithfulness to God and the perils of departing from His commands. It encourages us to examine our own lives and ensure that we remain steadfast in following God’s ways, rather than perpetuating sinful patterns or compromising our devotion to Him.
