2 Kings 14:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.” (2 Kings 14:8, KJV)

Historical Context:– The verse is situated in the divided kingdom period of Israel’s history, where the northern kingdom (Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah) were separate entities with different kings.

  • Amaziah was the king of Judah, and Jehoash (also known as Joash) was the king of Israel during this time.
  • The verse reflects the political tension between these two kings and their respective kingdoms.
  • Amaziah’s Initiative:
  • Amaziah took the initiative by sending messengers to Jehoash, proposing a face-to-face meeting between the two kings.
  • This invitation suggests a desire for confrontation, negotiation, or perhaps a military engagement.
  • Amaziah’s intention might have been to assert his authority or resolve conflicts that arose between the two kingdoms.
  • The Reason behind the Meeting:
  • The exact reason for the proposed meeting is not mentioned in this verse, but it can be inferred from the context and subsequent events.
  • In the preceding verses, Amaziah had defeated the Edomites, and he might have sought to solidify his position and expand his territory.
  • It is possible that Amaziah wanted to involve Jehoash in his military campaign against Edom or establish a strategic alliance against other common enemies.
  • Historical Consequences:
  • Jehoash responded to Amaziah’s invitation with a cautionary message, rebuking Amaziah for his pride and warning him against provoking unnecessary conflict (2 Kings 14:9-10).
  • Despite the warning, Amaziah persisted, resulting in a battle between Judah and Israel.
  • The battle ended with Amaziah’s defeat, and Jehoash seized treasures from the temple and palace in Jerusalem, weakening Judah (2 Kings 14:11-14).

Lessons and Application:

  • Pride and arrogance can lead to disastrous consequences. Amaziah’s pride in his recent victory blinded him to the potential risks of challenging Jehoash.
  • Seeking wisdom and counsel before making decisions is crucial. Amaziah’s refusal to heed Jehoash’s warning highlights the importance of listening to wise advice.
  • The verse reminds us to approach conflicts with humility and seek peaceful resolutions rather than hastily resorting to confrontations.

This Bible study provides an overview of the passage, its historical background, and practical lessons for contemporary believers.
