2 Kings 14:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And Amaziah the sonne of Ioash king of Iudah, liued after the death of Iehoash sonne of Iehoahaz king of Israel, fifteene yeeres. 2 Kings 14:17 (KJV)

In 2 Kings 14 we encounter the reign of Amaziah, the son of Joash, who became king of Judah. The chapter records a series of events and battles that marked his rule. Amaziah reigned over Judah for twenty‑nine years and is described as having done what was right in the sight of the Lord, though not with a whole heart (2 Kings 14:3). One of the most notable incidents was his war with the king of Israel, Jehoash. Amaziah sought a confrontation, and although Jehoash warned him against it, Amaziah ignored the counsel and went into battle. Judah was defeated, and Amaziah was taken captive (2 Kings 14:8‑14). Despite this setback, his reign continued, and the verse in 2 Kings 14:17 tells us that Amaziah lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash, providing a clear chronological marker for the later part of his rule.

The narrative of Amaziah offers several spiritual lessons. First, the consequences of pride are evident in his story; his overconfidence and refusal to heed wise advice led to defeat, reminding believers of the need for humility and reliance on God rather than personal strength. Second, the importance of seeking God’s guidance is highlighted. Amaziah’s reliance on military might instead of divine counsel resulted in loss, underscoring the necessity of praying for wisdom in all decisions. Third, his partial faithfulness—doing what was right but not with a whole heart—teaches that true devotion must be sincere and wholehearted, not merely a superficial compliance with the law. Finally, the broader account of his reign illustrates the consequences of sin, particularly his failure to remove the high places of idolatry, which contributed to the decline of Judah. These points together encourage believers to pursue humility, seek God’s direction, serve Him wholeheartedly, and avoid compromising with sin, drawing deeper insight from the brief chronological note of 2 Kings 14:17.
