2 Kings 15:23
“In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned two years.”
Historical Context:2 Kings 15:23 provides a snapshot of the divided kingdom of Israel during a time of political turmoil. At this point in history, the northern kingdom of Israel had a succession of kings, with each reigning for relatively short periods and often facing violent ends.
- The Reign of Pekahiah:
Pekahiah was the son of King Menahem and became the king of Israel in Samaria. However, his reign lasted only two years. Unfortunately, the biblical account does not provide many details about his reign or significant events during his time as king.
Connection to Previous Kings:Pekahiah’s reign follows that of his father, Menahem. Menahem was a wicked king who gained the throne through a violent coup. It is possible that Pekahiah inherited a kingdom with political unrest and challenges due to his father’s actions.
