2 Kings 19:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.”

This verse takes place during a critical moment in the life of King Hezekiah of Judah. The Assyrian king, Sennacherib, had sent a threatening letter to Hezekiah, mocking his trust in God and boasting of his own power. Faced with this dire situation, Hezekiah takes the letter to the house of the Lord and spreads it before God.

Here are a few key points and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Seeking God’s guidance:Hezekiah’s immediate response to the threatening letter was to seek guidance from the Lord. He didn’t panic or rely on his own strength, but rather went straight to the presence of God. This teaches us the importance of turning to God first when faced with challenges or difficult situations in our lives. Hezekiah sets an example of seeking God’s wisdom and direction before taking any action.

Trusting God’s power:By spreading the letter before the Lord, Hezekiah symbolically placed the problem in God’s hands. This act demonstrates his trust in God’s power and ability to handle the situation. Hezekiah acknowledged that the Assyrian threat was beyond his own strength and that he needed divine intervention. Similarly, we should learn to surrender our worries, fears, and problems to God, trusting in His strength and ability to bring about a solution.

Honoring God’s sovereignty:Hezekiah’s action of spreading the letter before the Lord acknowledges God’s sovereignty over his life and kingdom. He recognizes that God is the ultimate authority and ruler over all things. As believers, we should also acknowledge and honor God’s sovereignty in our lives. Recognizing His authority allows us to submit to His will, trust in His plans, and experience His peace, even in the face of challenging circumstances.

The power of prayer:Though the verse does not explicitly mention prayer, it is implied by Hezekiah’s action of spreading the letter before the Lord. This act can be seen as an act of prayer, as Hezekiah is presenting his petition before God. It reminds us of the power of prayer and the importance of bringing our concerns and burdens before God in prayer. God invites us to cast our anxieties upon Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

Seeking God’s counsel:Hezekiah’s action also demonstrates his desire to seek God’s counsel and wisdom. By spreading the letter before the Lord, he was essentially asking for guidance on how to respond to the Assyrian threat. This teaches us the importance of seeking God’s counsel in every aspect of our lives. When we seek God’s wisdom, He promises to guide us and make our paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).

In conclusion, 2 Kings 19:14 portrays Hezekiah’s response to the threatening letter from the Assyrian king. His immediate action of taking the letter to the house of the Lord and spreading it before God shows us the importance of seeking God’s guidance, trusting in His power, honoring His sovereignty, and seeking His counsel. It serves as a reminder to us to turn to God in times of trouble, relying on His strength and wisdom to navigate through life’s challenges.
