Listen to this article

And it came to passe afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying: 2 Kings 20:4 (KJV)

“Go back and tell Hezekiah, captain of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you, and on the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.’” “Go back and tell Hezekeh, the ruler of my people, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of your ancestor David: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you, and I will add fifteen years to your life.’”

The surrounding narrative records that King Hezekiah had fallen seriously ill and received a distressing message from the prophet Isaiah warning him of imminent death. Deeply distressed, Hezekiah turned to the Lord in prayer, beseeching Him for mercy and healing. It is within this context that verse 4 unfolds.

Divine Healing and Restoration: Through Isaiah, God promises Hezekiah physical healing and the extension of his life. The promise gives Hezekiah confidence that his illness will not end in death but will be followed by restored health and additional years, even a return to worship in the house of the Lord.

The Significance: The verse underscores the importance of prayer and highlights God’s willingness to respond to sincere supplication. Prayer is presented not as a futile exercise but as a powerful means of communicating with God. Hezekiah’s prayer exemplifies humility, faith, and trust in God’s sovereignty.

Compassionate God: The passage reveals a God who sees and hears the cries of His people. Hezekiah’s story reminds believers that when they turn to God with a genuine heart and seek His intervention, He is capable of bringing healing and restoration.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 20:4 demonstrates the significance of prayer, God’s responsiveness to sincere supplication, and His ability to bring healing and restoration. It encourages believers to approach God with their needs, trusting in His faithfulness and compassion.
