2 Kings 22:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And Hilkiah the high priest said unto him, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD.”

“And said unto Hilkiah the high priest, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.” This verse is part of a significant narrative in the history of the Kingdom of Judah. To gain a better understanding of its context, let’s explore the surrounding events and the key characters involved.

Historical Background: 2 Kings 22 is set during the reign of King Josiah, who became king at the age of eight. At this point, the northern kingdom of Israel had already been conquered by the Assyrians, and only the southern kingdom of Judah remained. The spiritual condition of Judah had declined, with idolatry and disregard for God’s laws becoming prevalent.

The Discovery of the Book of the Law: During the 18th year of Josiah’s reign, the high priest Hilkiah informed the king that he had found the book of the law in the temple. It is believed that this book was likely the Book of Deuteronomy or a portion of it. It had been lost or neglected for some time, and its discovery was significant because it contained the instructions and commands of God for His people.

The Reaction and Response: Upon learning about the book of the law, King Josiah recognized the gravity of the situation. He tore his clothes as a sign of distress, acknowledging that the people had not been following God’s commands. He sent Hilkiah, along with other officials, to inquire of the Lord regarding the contents of the book and the impending judgment for the nation’s disobedience.

The Reading of the Book: Hilkiah passed the book of the law to Shaphan, a scribe, who then read it aloud to the king. As the narrative unfolds in the subsequent verses, we learn about Josiah’s response to the words of the law and his determination to institute reforms and restore the worship of the Lord.

Key Lessons and Applications:

The Importance of God’s Word: The discovery of the book of the law highlights the significance of God’s Word in the lives of His people. Neglecting or forgetting His commands can lead to spiritual decay and waywardness.

Personal and National Repentance: King Josiah’s response of distress and repentance serves as a model for us today. Recognizing our failures, both individually and collectively, and turning back to God is essential for spiritual renewal.

The Power of God’s Word to Transform: When the word of God is read and embraced, it has the potential to bring about radical change. Josiah’s commitment to follow the commands of the law resulted in a national revival and a renewed dedication to worshiping the true God.

The Need for Regular Examination: The fact that the book of the law was lost or forgotten within the temple indicates the danger of complacency and neglecting the study of Scripture. Regular engagement with God’s Word is crucial for spiritual growth and vitality.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 22:7 reveals the pivotal moment when the book of the law was rediscovered, leading to a powerful spiritual revival during the reign of King Josiah. It underscores the importance of God’s Word, the significance of repentance, and the transformative power of Scripture.
