2 Kings 22:20
Behold therefore, I will gather thee vnto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy graue in peace, and thine eyes shal not see all the euil which I will bring vpon this place. And they brought the king word againe. 2 Kings 22:20 (KJV)
The passage belongs to the larger narrative of King Josiah of Judah, a ruler noted for his vigorous reforms aimed at restoring true worship of God and strict observance of the law. During temple renovations, the high priest Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law—most likely the book of Deuteronomy—hidden in the temple’s archive. This finding exposed the depth of Judah’s departure from God’s commandments and set the stage for a pivotal spiritual crisis.
Upon hearing the words of the newly found law, Josiah’s heart was struck. He tore his garments in repentance, a sign of deep sorrow, and sought divine counsel through the prophetess Huldah. Huldah conveyed God’s response, which is recorded in 2 Kings 22:15‑20. The divine message assures Josiah that because of his humble and contrite reaction, he will not witness the impending disaster that will overtake the nation. Instead, he will die in peace, be gathered to his fathers, and be spared the sight of the coming evil.
Huldah’s own words echo the seriousness of the judgment: “Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and the men that are left shall be smitten.” This stark warning underscores the certainty of judgment on Judah while simultaneously highlighting the special mercy granted to Josiah.
The episode teaches several enduring principles. First, humility and repentance before God are pleasing and can invoke divine mercy, even amid national judgment. Second, God’s grace is evident in His willingness to spare those who earnestly turn to Him, as shown by Josiah’s promised peaceful death. Third, the narrative reminds believers that sin carries both personal and corporate consequences; the nation of Judah still faced devastation despite Josiah’s personal deliverance.
Finally, the discovery of the Book of the Law illustrates the vital role of Scripture in the believer’s life. God’s Word reveals sin, directs righteousness, and leads to repentance and reconciliation. When we encounter Scripture, we are called to respond with the same humility and seeking of God’s guidance that Josiah displayed, trusting that God honors those who diligently pursue Him.
