2 Kings 25:17

Listen to this article

“And the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass. And like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work.”

This verse is part of the account of the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem and the subsequent destruction of the city and its temple. In this particular verse, the focus is on two pillars located in the temple of Solomon.

Symbolism and Purpose:The pillars mentioned in this verse were key architectural elements within the temple. They were called Jachin and Boaz (1 Kings 7:21), and they held symbolic significance. Jachin means “He establishes,” and Boaz means “In Him is strength.” These names represented the stability and strength that God provided for His people.

Construction and Design:The verse describes the measurements and details of one of the pillars. The height of the pillar was eighteen cubits (approximately 27 feet or 8.2 meters), with a three-cubit (approximately 4.5 feet or 1.4 meters) chapiter or capital on top. The pillar was adorned with wreathen work, which refers to intricate ornamental design, and pomegranates made of brass were placed around the capital.

Historical Context:The mention of these pillars serves as a reminder of the grandeur and glory of the temple constructed by Solomon. The pillars were part of the temple’s entrance and represented the strength and stability of God’s presence among His people. However, with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, the pillars, along with the rest of the temple, were likely demolished and carried away as spoils of war.

Spiritual Lessons:While this verse primarily describes the physical attributes of the pillars, we can draw some spiritual insights from their symbolism. The pillars remind us of God’s faithfulness, establishing His covenant with His people and providing them with strength. They also point to the importance of stability and reliance on God in our lives.

In summary:2 Kings 25:17 provides a glimpse into the design and details of the pillars in the temple of Solomon, emphasizing their symbolic significance and the grandeur of the temple. These pillars serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the importance of relying on His strength and stability in our lives.
