1 Chronicles 1:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that traces the genealogy of various nations and the descendants of Adam, focusing particularly on the line of David and the tribe of Judah. Chapter 1 provides a detailed account of the generations from Adam to Abraham.

Key People:Joktan, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab are mentioned in this verse. Joktan was one of the sons of Eber, who was a descendant of Shem (Genesis 10:25-30).

Historical Significance:Joktan’s descendants are listed to emphasize the breadth of nations and people groups that originated from him. The mention of Ophir and Havilah is of particular interest, as these names are associated with places that were known for their wealth and resources.

Ophir and Havilah:Ophir is mentioned in the Bible as a place known for its abundance of gold, precious stones, and other valuable commodities (1 Kings 9:28; 1 Kings 10:11; Job 22:24; Psalm 45:9). Havilah is mentioned in the book of Genesis as a location associated with gold, bdellium, and onyx stones (Genesis 2:11-12).
