1 Chronicles 1:47

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And when Hadad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah, reigned in his stead. 1 Chronicles 1:47 (KJV)

Context: 1 Chronicles 1:47 is part of a genealogical account found in the first chapter of the book of 1 Chronicles. This chapter primarily consists of a lengthy list of names, tracing the genealogy of Adam down to the time of the Israelite monarchy and, specifically, the lineage of Esau, the twin brother of Jacob and the son of Isaac. The preceding verses mention the kings of Edom, the nation that descended from Esau, and their line of succession. Hadad is one of the names mentioned earlier in the genealogy of Edomite kings. According to the verse, Hadad had died, and in his place Samlah of Masrekah became the king of Edom. The Bible does not provide much additional information about Samlah or his reign. The purpose of this genealogical account is to establish the historical lineage of the people of Israel, as well as to emphasize the fulfillment of God’s promises and prophecies throughout history. It is important to note that the book of 1 Chronicles was written to the Israelites after their return from exile in Babylon. The genealogies in 1 Chronicles aimed to reconnect the returned exiles with their ancestral roots and heritage, reinforcing their identity as God’s chosen people. While this verse may not contain a direct spiritual or moral lesson like many other passages, it serves as a piece of historical information that contributes to the overall narrative of God’s plan for His people. As with any verse in the Bible, reading it within the broader context of the surrounding verses and chapters helps to gain a deeper understanding of its significance.
