1 Chronicles 2:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead, whom hee married when he was threescore yeeres old, and she bare him Segub. 1 Chronicles 2:21 (KJV)

This verse is part of a genealogy section in the book of 1 Chronicles, which traces the lineage of various families of Israel, particularly the descendants of Judah. The genealogies serve to establish the historical and ancestral connections of different families and individuals. In this specific verse, we encounter Hezron, who was the son of Perez and grandson of Judah. Hezron is a significant figure in the lineage of David and ultimately Jesus Christ. The verse tells us that Hezron married the daughter of Machir, who was the father of Gilead. The verse concludes by mentioning that Hezron’s wife bore him a son named Segub. Segub would then be a descendant of Hezron and become part of the genealogical record. While this verse may appear to be a straightforward genealogical entry, it provides valuable insights into the historical context and family connections of the time. It reminds us of the significance of lineage and the meticulous preservation of ancestral records in the Old Testament. In a broader spiritual sense, this verse underscores the faithfulness of God in preserving the lineage through which the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would eventually come. It serves as a reminder that God’s plans and purposes are often worked out through ordinary individuals and families, and that age or unconventional circumstances need not hinder God’s divine providence. Overall, this verse is a small part of the rich tapestry of genealogies found in the Bible, which collectively reveal God’s faithfulness and sovereign plan throughout history.
