1 Chronicles 2:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And Segub begat Jair, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gilead.”

Context:This verse is a part of the genealogy of the descendants of Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. It provides a record of the lineage of the tribe of Judah. The preceding verses describe the descendants of Caleb, who was a renowned figure in the Israelite history. Chronicles 2:22 specifically focuses on a man named Segub, who is mentioned as the father of Jair. Jair is known for his leadership and possession of twenty-three cities in the region of Gilead. It is worth noting that the names Segub and Jair appear in other parts of the Bible as well, but they may refer to different individuals. This verse sheds light on the territorial acquisitions of Jair in the land of Gilead. Gilead was an area located east of the Jordan River and was part of the territory inherited by the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh. Jair’s possession of these cities indicates his prominence and influence within that region during that time. From a broader perspective, this verse highlights the historical significance of individuals and their familial connections within the lineage of Judah. The genealogical records found throughout the Bible provide a framework for tracing the ancestry of various figures and tribes, emphasizing the fulfilment of God’s promises and prophecies. Overall, 1 Chronicles 2:22 serves as a brief but important piece of historical information, providing insight into the lineage and territorial dominion of Jair, a descendant of Judah.
