The fifth, Shephatia of Abital: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife. 1 Chronicles 3:3 (KJV)

Context and Background: The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that traces the lineage of the Israelite people, particularly focusing on the tribe of Judah and the descendants of King David. It emphasizes the establishment of the Davidic dynasty and the importance of Jerusalem as the religious and political centre of Israel.

The Sons of David: In this verse, it specifically mentions two sons of David who were born to him while he was in Hebron: Ammon, the firstborn, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Chileab, the second, of Abigail the Carmelitess. These were among the many sons David had from his wives and concubines, and the verse identifies the mothers of these sons.

Ammon and Chileab: Ammon, the firstborn son of David, is noted first. He later fell in love with his half‑sister Tamar, an incident that led to a tragic act of rape (2 Samuel 13) and severe consequences for his family. Chileab, the second son, is mentioned only here and is not recorded elsewhere in Scripture. His name, though less discussed, reminds us that God’s purposes include even those whose stories are brief.

The Importance of Recording Lineage: The genealogical records in the Bible, including this passage, highlight the importance of tracing one’s lineage. In Jewish culture, genealogies were crucial for establishing inheritance, tribal affiliation, and priesthood eligibility. These records also serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in preserving the Davidic line, which ultimately leads to the birth of Jesus Christ.

Consequences of Sin: The mention of Ammon reminds us of the devastating consequences of sin. His actions brought tragedy and long‑lasting effects on his family, serving as a sobering reminder of the destructive power of unchecked desires and the need for God’s guidance in our relationships.

God’s Judgment: While Chileab’s brief appearance does not provide a narrative of judgment, the overall context of David’s family demonstrates that God examines the hearts and actions of all. The passage underscores that ultimately God is the righteous judge who holds each person accountable.

God’s Sovereignty: Although this verse may appear as a simple genealogical record, it points to God’s sovereignty in preserving the Davidic line and fulfilling His promises. Through this lineage, Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was born, demonstrating God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His plan for redemption.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 3:3 offers a glimpse into the genealogy of David’s descendants, underscores the importance of recording lineage, warns of the consequences of sin, and affirms God’s sovereign work in preserving the Davidic line for the ultimate purpose of redemption through Christ.
