1 Chronicles 3:7
And Noga, and Nepheg, and Iaphia, 1 Chronicles 3:7 (KJV)
Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Chileab, of Abigail the Carmelitess. This verse is part of a genealogical record found in the book of 2 Samuel. It lists the sons of David, who was a significant figure in Israel’s history as both a king and a key ancestor of Jesus Christ. In this particular verse, the focus is on the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron. Hebron was a city in the southern part of Israel and served as David’s capital before he conquered Jerusalem.
Amnon: He was the firstborn son of David, born to him through Ahinoam the Jezreelitess.
Ammon’s story is recorded in 2 Samuel 13. Unfortunately, his life was marked by tragedy and sin. He developed an inappropriate desire for his half-sister Tamar, which led to her being violated. Eventually, Amnon was killed by his half-brother Absalom as an act of revenge for what he had done to Tamar. The genealogy in 2 Samuel serves multiple purposes. It emphasises the continuity of God’s promises and the fulfilment of His covenant with David. It also reinforces the lineage of David, which is crucial for establishing Jesus’ legal and royal ancestry in the New Testament. While this verse may seem like a simple list of names and relationships, it highlights the complexity of David’s family life and the consequences of sin. It serves as a reminder of the fallen nature of humanity and the need for redemption and forgiveness.
