1 Chronicles 4:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And the sonnes of Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam, and the sonnes of Elah, euen Kenaz. 1 Chronicles 4:15 (KJV)

Chronicles is a book in the Old Testament that primarily focuses on the genealogy and history of the Israelite tribes. It contains extensive genealogical records of the Israelite families, preserving the lineage of each tribe with careful detail.

The specific verse 1 Chronicles 4:15 lists the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh—namely Iru, Elah, and Naam—and also records that the son of Elah was Kenaz. This concise enumeration exemplifies the chronicler’s method of naming each descendant to maintain a clear family record.

Earlier in the chronicle, 1 Chronicles 2:18‑20 records Caleb, the son of Hezron, as having sons Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon, showing the broader family line and connecting Caleb’s descendants across generations.

The name Kenaz also appears in Genesis 36:11, where he is identified as a son of Eliphaz, who himself was a son of Esau, linking the name to the broader ancestral narrative beyond the tribe of Judah.

The alignment of the genealogical data in 1 Chronicles with the earlier account in Genesis underscores the coherence of the biblical narrative concerning family lines. These passages provide accurate genealogical information about key figures in biblical history, illustrating the careful preservation of family lines throughout the Scriptures.

Thus, the study of these verses offers a window into the way the biblical authors preserved the memory of Israel’s ancestors across generations, reinforcing the importance of genealogy in understanding the identity and heritage of the Israelite people.
