1 Chronicles 4:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And the sonnes of Simeon were: Amnon, and Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon. And the sonnes of Ishi were: Zoheth, and Ben-zoheth. 1 Chronicles 4:20 (KJV)

“Judah and his brethren were the father of Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah.”

Context: The book of Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogies and history of the Israelites, particularly focusing on the southern kingdom of Judah. The passage in question is part of a genealogical record, specifically within the genealogy of Judah.

Judah and His Brethren: Here, Judah refers to the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Judah was the fourth son of Jacob and Leah and became a prominent tribe among the Israelites. “His brethren” refers to Judah’s brothers, the other sons of Jacob.

Amminadab: Amminadab was the son of Ram and the father of Nahshon. The genealogy is tracing the lineage from Judah to Amminadab.

Nahshon: Nahshon was the son of Amminadab. He is described as the “prince of the children of Judah,” which implies that he held a position of leadership within the tribe of Judah. Nahshon is mentioned in other biblical accounts as well. In the book of Numbers 1:7 and 2:3, Nahshon is described as the leader of the tribe of Judah during the time of the Israelites’ wilderness journey. He played a significant role in the story of the crossing of the Red Sea, where he led the tribe of Judah into the waters ahead of the other tribes.

Significance: The inclusion of Nahshon’s name in this genealogical record highlights his prominence and leadership within the tribe of Judah. His role as a leader during the wilderness journey demonstrates his faithfulness and obedience to God.

Overall, this passage serves as a historical record, emphasizing the lineage of the tribe of Judah and highlighting the important role played by Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, within the tribe. It reminds readers of the lineage of Judah, a tribe that held great significance in Israel’s history, culminating in the Davidic dynasty and the birth of Jesus Christ, who came from the tribe of Judah.
