1 Chronicles 4:29

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And at Bilha, and at Ezem, and at Tolad, 1 Chronicles 4:29 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical account of the genealogies of the Israelites, especially the descendants of Judah. The passage in question appears in a section that lists the descendants of Simeon, one of the twelve sons of Jacob.

Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah, and his tribe settled in the southern region of the Promised Land. The verses that precede 1 Chronicles 4:29 provide a genealogical record of Simeon’s descendants, noting the various towns and settlements that formed their inheritance.

The verse enumerates a series of towns that belonged to the Simeonite inheritance. These include Beersheba, Moladah, Hazarshual, Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad, Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, Bethmarcaboth, Hazarsusim, Bethbirei, and Shaaraim. All of these locations were regarded as the cities of Simeon’s descendants up to the reign of David.

Significance of the mentioned places:

  • Bilhah – The exact location of Bilhah is uncertain, and the Bible provides limited information about it. While the name resembles that of Jacob’s wife Bilhah, there is no explicit biblical evidence that the place was named after her.
  • Ezem – Ezem is likewise listed among the towns of Simeon’s inheritance, but its precise geographical setting remains unknown.
  • Tolad – Tolad is also mentioned as part of the Simeonite inheritance, yet little information is available about its location, and its exact site is uncertain.

Together, these brief references highlight the spread of Simeon’s descendants across a number of settlements in the southern territory. The passage underscores the tribal allocations that existed before the unified kingdom under David, reminding readers of the historical and geographical context of Israel’s early tribal organization.
