1 Chronicles 6:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And these are they, whom Dauid set ouer the seruice of song in the house of the Lord, after that the Arke had rest. 1 Chronicles 6:31 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account of the genealogies, reigns, and activities of various individuals in the Old Testament, particularly focusing on the lineage of David and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. In this specific verse, the author mentions those appointed by David to oversee the service of song in the house of the Lord after the ark of the covenant had been settled in Jerusalem.

The verse highlights the significance of worship in the house of the Lord. Worship through music and song has been an integral part of the religious practices of God’s people throughout history. The appointment of individuals to oversee this specific aspect of worship demonstrates its importance and the care taken to ensure its proper execution.

King David played a central role in establishing the worship practices in the tabernacle. He was known for his musical abilities and his passionate worship of God. Under his leadership, the worship of God was revived and elevated to a central position in the life of the Israelites.

The phrase “after that the ark had rest” refers to the time when David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, settling it in a temporary tent (tabernacle) as recorded in 2 Samuel 6:17 and 1 Chronicles 15:1. Previously, the ark had been captured by the Philistines and had moved between several locations. With the ark settled in Jerusalem, David desired to establish a proper system of worship to honor and glorify God.

The importance of worship: Just as worship was crucial in the Old Testament, it continues to hold significant value in the lives of believers today. Worship allows us to express our love, gratitude, and reverence towards God. David’s appointment of individuals to oversee the service of song reminds us of the importance of having dedicated and skilled leaders in the area of worship. Leaders play a vital role in guiding and facilitating meaningful worship experiences for the congregation. The ark being settled in Jerusalem symbolizes finding peace and rest in the presence of God. As believers, we can find rest for our souls by drawing near to God and seeking His presence in our lives.

Let us prioritise worship in our lives and communities, recognising its significance in our relationship with God. Whether through music, singing, or other forms of worship, let us engage wholeheartedly, seeking to honour and glorify God in all we do. Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult additional commentaries or study resources for a more comprehensive understanding of the passage.
