1 Chronicles 6:63

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

Unto the sonnes of Merari were giuen by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelue cities. 1 Chronicles 6:63 (KJV)

To understand the verse better, let’s first establish some context. The book of 1 Chronicles is primarily a genealogical record and historical account of the lineage of the Israelites, particularly focusing on the descendants of Aaron, the high priest. Chapter 6 contains the genealogy of the Levites, who were set apart by God to serve in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Let’s read 1 Chronicles 6:63 (KJV).

In this verse we learn that the sons of Merari, one of the three Levitical families, were given twelve cities as their inheritance. The Merarites were responsible for the care and transportation of the various components of the tabernacle and later the temple, such as the framework, boards, pillars, and other heavy objects.

The allocation of these cities to the Merarites was determined by lot, a common method in ancient Israel for making decisions or allocating portions of land. The cities were taken from the broader inheritance of the other Israelite tribes—specifically from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun—ensuring the Levites had places to live among the people they served.

The allocation of cities to the Levitical families highlights God’s provision and care for His chosen people. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites did not receive a territorial inheritance; instead they were given cities scattered throughout the territories of the other tribes. This distribution ensured that the Levites would have dwelling places and provisions while fulfilling their priestly duties and serving the people.

God’s provision: Just as God provided for the Levites, He is faithful to provide for His people today. We can trust in His provision and care for our needs as we fulfill the roles and responsibilities He has given us.

Serving with dedication: The Levites, including the Merarites, were entrusted with significant responsibilities in the service of God. They were dedicated to their tasks and carried them out faithfully. We can learn from their example and serve God with dedication and excellence in whatever roles He has called us to.

Unity and cooperation: The allocation of cities to the Merarites involved the cooperation of multiple tribes. This highlights the importance of unity and working together for a common purpose. As believers, we are called to work together in harmony, utilizing our unique gifts and talents for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Remember to pray and ask for God’s guidance as you study His Word and seek to apply its principles to your life.
