1 Chronicles 7:17
“And the sons of Ulam; Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh.”
Context and Background:The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical account of the lineage and genealogy of the Israelites. It focuses on the history of the nation of Israel, from Adam to the time of King David. Chapter 7 provides a detailed list of the genealogy of the tribe of Manasseh.
The Sons of Ulam:This verse specifically mentions the sons of Ulam, one of the descendants of Manasseh. Ulam’s son mentioned in this verse is Bedan.
Gilead, Machir, and Manasseh:The verse further traces the lineage by mentioning Gilead, Machir, and Manasseh. Gilead and Machir were Manasseh’s ancestors. Manasseh was one of the twelve sons of Joseph, who was the son of Jacob (also known as Israel).
Significance of Manasseh:Manasseh was the firstborn of Joseph’s two sons, the other being Ephraim. In the biblical narrative, Manasseh and Ephraim were both blessed by their grandfather, Jacob, and received an equal portion of inheritance as tribes within the nation of Israel. The tribe of Manasseh played a significant role in the history of Israel, especially during the time of the conquest of the Promised Land.
Overall Genealogical Importance:The genealogical records in the Bible served various purposes, including preserving the history and heritage of the Israelites. They helped establish a sense of identity, determine inheritance rights, and fulfill prophecies related to the coming Messiah, as many messianic prophecies were tied to the lineage of David, who descended from Judah, and ultimately to Abraham.
