1 Chronicles 9:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

“Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Pharez the son of Judah.”

Passage:“Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Pharez the son of Judah.” (1 Chronicles 9:4, KJV)

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical account of the people of Israel, specifically focusing on the genealogies of the twelve tribes of Israel. Chapter 9 lists the returning exiles from Babylon and the Levitical duties assigned to them.

Genealogy and lineage:The verse in question mentions Uthai, who is identified as the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani. This lineage is traced back to Pharez, the son of Judah. This genealogy is significant because it highlights the ancestry of Uthai, who belonged to the tribe of Judah.

The Tribe of Judah:Judah was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel) and was foretold to become a ruling tribe (Genesis 49:8-12). The tribe of Judah held a prominent position among the tribes of Israel, and the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would eventually come from this tribe (Matthew 1:1-3). This genealogy in 1 Chronicles 9:4 reinforces the lineage of Uthai back to the tribe of Judah.

Significance of lineage:In ancient Jewish culture, genealogy and lineage were crucial. It was important to establish one’s lineage to determine tribal affiliation, inheritance rights, and eligibility for various responsibilities within the community. The mention of Uthai’s lineage back to Judah highlights his position as a descendant of the tribe’s noble lineage.
