1 Chronicles 9:37

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth. 1 Chronicles 9:37 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles provides a detailed account of the genealogies and history of the Israelites, focusing particularly on the tribe of Levi and their responsibilities in the service of the temple. Chapter 9 begins with a list of the people of Israel who returned from exile and settled in their cities. Verse 31 records, “And of the sons of the Levites; Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, was the chief to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.” The Levites, descendants of Levi, the son of Jacob, were set apart by God to serve in various priestly duties in the tabernacle and later in the temple. They were responsible for maintaining the sacred services, including offering sacrifices, leading worship, and caring for the holy objects. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no land inheritance; they were to be supported by the tithes and offerings of the people.

In verses 28‑29 some Levites are noted as keepers of the storehouses, including the shewbread, though specific names are not given there. Verse 37, however, identifies two Levites by name: “Mattaniah the son of Zabud, and Jeshaiah, son of Azur, the Levite, were keepers of the pantry of the house of God.” Their duty was to oversee the pantry that supplied the temple service, including the shewbread—twelve loaves placed on a table in the Holy Place, replaced each Sabbath, with the old loaves eaten by the priests. This arrangement underscores that even roles that may seem minor or routine are vital for the proper functioning of worship.

The passage highlights the importance of faithfulness in service to God. Whether one serves as a chief priest, a keeper of the pantry, or any other function, diligent and reverent work contributes to God’s purposes. Believers today can learn that faithfulness in our assigned roles, the value of service regardless of perceived importance, and God’s appreciation for faithfulness in all things are timeless principles. Every task, when performed with reverence and diligence, advances the kingdom and honors the One who has called us to serve.
