1 Chronicles 13:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that recounts the events surrounding King David’s attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred chest that symbolized the presence and glory of God among the Israelites.

In this specific verse, we see that David’s first attempt to transport the Ark to Jerusalem had encountered a problem. They had placed the Ark on a new cart, and as they were traveling, the oxen stumbled, and Uzza, one of the men guiding the cart, reached out his hand to steady the Ark. God’s anger burned against Uzza, and he struck him down for his irreverence (1 Chronicles 13:9-10).

As a result, David became afraid of the Lord and decided not to continue with the Ark to Jerusalem. Instead, he sought to find a suitable place for it to remain. That’s when the Ark was brought to the house of Obed-edom, a Levite, who was blessed by God during the three months it stayed there.

From this passage, we can draw a few important lessons:

The Holiness and Reverence of God:The incident with Uzza serves as a reminder of the holiness of God and the importance of approaching Him with reverence. The Ark was not to be touched or treated lightly, as it represented the presence of God among His people. This event highlights the need to approach God with awe and respect.

God’s Blessings:Despite the tragic event with Uzza, God showed His mercy and blessed the house of Obed-edom during the time the Ark was in his care. This demonstrates that God’s blessings can extend to those who honor and respect Him. Obed-edom’s household experienced a season of favor and prosperity because of their association with the Ark.

Seeking God’s Will:David’s decision to pause and find a suitable place for the Ark reveals his desire to seek God’s will and not rush into things. It teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our own lives. Sometimes, it is necessary to take a step back, reflect, and seek God’s direction before moving forward.

Learning from Mistakes:David’s fear and decision to leave the Ark with Obed-edom show his recognition of the mistake that was made. It is important for us to acknowledge our errors, seek forgiveness, and learn from our experiences. David’s subsequent actions in later chapters demonstrate his renewed determination to bring the Ark to Jerusalem in accordance with God’s commands.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 13:14 teaches us about the holiness of God, the need for reverence, God’s blessings upon those who honor Him, seeking God’s will, and learning from our mistakes. It encourages us to approach God with reverence and seek His guidance in all our endeavors.
