1 Chronicles 15:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zachariah, Ben, and Iaziel, & Shemiramoth, and Iehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maasiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphaleh, and Mikniah, and Obed Edom, and Iehiel the Porters. 1 Chronicles 15:18 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogy of the Israelites and records the reign of King David. Chapter 15 focuses on David’s preparations for bringing the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem.

In this verse the names listed are those of Levite porters who were responsible for carrying the ark. The phrase “second degree” indicates that they were subordinate to the high‑ranking Levites. The term “brethren” shows that they were members of the same family or clan, and “porters” refers to the gatekeepers assigned to guard and open the gates of the tabernacle or temple.

The transportation of the ark was a momentous event because the ark represented the presence and glory of God among His people. The participation of the Levites, especially the gatekeepers, underscores the vital role of the priestly families in Israel’s worship and service to God.

From this passage we draw several key lessons. First, the reference to “brethren” highlights the importance of unity and cooperation; believers are called to work together in harmony, each supporting one another. Second, the gatekeepers’ involvement reminds us that faithfulness in even seemingly small or less prominent tasks is valuable to the Lord. Third, the ark as a symbol of God’s presence points to the privilege believers have in experiencing the Holy Spirit’s indwelling.

Applying these truths today, the church should pursue unity, recognizing that every member has a role in building up the body of Christ. We are to serve the Lord faithfully, whether our assignments are great or modest, knowing that all service is precious to Him. Moreover, we should cultivate an awareness of God’s presence within us, living lives that honor the Holy Spirit who dwells in every believer.

Finally, readers are encouraged to study the surrounding verses and the entire chapter of 1 Chronicles 15 to gain a fuller understanding of the context and message of this passage.
