1 Chronicles 16:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Giue thankes vnto the Lord, call vpon his name, make knowen his deeds among the people. 1 Chronicles 16:8 (KJV)

The verse is set within 1 Chronicles 16, which records King David’s joyous procession of the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem and its placement in a specially prepared tent. In this chapter David appoints Asaph and his relatives as musicians and singers, establishing a worship ministry that would proclaim God’s glory before the Ark.

Gratitude and Thanksgiving: The opening command, “Give thanks unto the Lord,” underscores the essential role of gratitude in the life of the believer. David recognized that thanking God is more than a ritual; it is an acknowledgment of His steadfast goodness, faithfulness, and the many blessings He bestows upon His people.

Calling upon God: The phrase “call upon his name” invites believers to seek the presence, guidance, and help of the Almighty. To call upon the Lord’s name is to admit our dependence on Him, to recognize His sovereign authority, and to turn to Him in prayer whenever need arises.

Sharing God’s Deeds: By urging us to “make known his deeds among the people,” the verse calls each Christian to become a witness to God’s mighty works. Proclaiming His deeds strengthens the faith of the community, spreads the knowledge of His power, and invites others to experience His saving grace.

Application: This passage serves as a practical reminder that gratitude, prayerful dependence, and bold testimony should characterize daily Christian conduct. Believers are encouraged to cultivate a thankful heart, to habitually invoke God’s name in prayer, and to actively share testimonies of His faithfulness with those around them.

Connection to Jesus Christ: Though rooted in the Old Testament, the principles of thankfulness, reliance on God, and proclamation of His works find their fullest expression in the life and ministry of Jesus. Christ modeled a life of continual gratitude to the Father and frequently called upon God’s name in prayer, thereby fulfilling the spirit of this ancient exhortation for all who follow Him.
