1 Chronicles 19:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.”

This verse is part of a historical account in the Old Testament that describes the conflict between the Ammonites and the people of Israel during the reign of King David.

It provides valuable insights into the themes of courage, valiance, and reliance on the Lord.

Be of good courage:The verse begins with an exhortation to be of good courage. This call to courage implies the need for strength, boldness, and fearlessness in the face of challenges or enemies. It is an encouragement to trust in God’s strength and provision, rather than being discouraged or overwhelmed.

Let us behave ourselves valiantly:The verse further emphasizes the importance of behaving valiantly. This implies acting with bravery, honour, and integrity. It encourages individuals to demonstrate courage and commitment in their actions, especially in the defence and protection of their people and the cities of God.

For our people and for the cities of our God:The verse highlights the motivation behind their courageous behaviour. It is not merely for personal gain or reputation but for the sake of their people and the cities that are considered sacred to God. This signifies a self‑less commitment to the welfare and well‑being of their community and the places dedicated to God’s worship.

Let the Lord do that which is good in his sight:This part of the verse acknowledges the ultimate sovereignty of God. It conveys a sense of surrender and trust, recognizing that the Lord is ultimately in control and knows what is best. It implies a willingness to submit to God’s will and to trust that He will bring about what is good according to His perfect wisdom and knowledge.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 19:13 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of courage, valiance, and reliance on God in the face of challenges. It encourages us to stand firm, act with integrity, and trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He will work all things together for good according to His purposes.
